Transfers, Contract Extensions, and New Rules: Bundesliga Kicks Off 2026/27 Season with Fresh Momentum

2026-07-02 · Bundesliga

The 2026/27 Bundesliga season introduces major changes: Julien Duranville leaves Borussia Dortmund for Olympique Lyon, Dan-Axel Zagadou extends his contract with VfB Stuttgart, and new rule changes aim to increase pace and fairness in the game.

The 2026/27 Bundesliga season kicks off with fresh momentum both on and off the pitch. Several high-profile personnel decisions and comprehensive rule changes are shaping the start of Germany’s top football league.

Julien Duranville’s Move to Olympique Lyon

Julien Duranville, a 20-year-old midfielder, is leaving Borussia Dortmund with immediate effect to join Olympique Lyon in France’s Ligue 1. The Belgian joined Dortmund in January 2023 as a 16-year-old from RSC Anderlecht and quickly established himself in the professional squad. For BVB, he made 15 Bundesliga appearances, nine UEFA Champions League games, and featured in the DFB-Pokal and FIFA Club World Cup. In the 2024/25 season, he scored his only competitive goal for Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal against Phönix Lübeck. During a loan spell at FC Basel, he contributed two goals and one assist in 16 league matches. Duranville also made his debut for the Belgian national team in September 2024 in a 3-1 victory over Israel. Lars Ricken, BVB’s Sporting Director, thanked Duranville for his time at the club: "We thank Juju for three and a half years in black and yellow and wish him every success in his sporting future, as well as all the best for him and his family."

Dan-Axel Zagadou Extends Contract with VfB Stuttgart

After a challenging period sidelined by injury, Dan-Axel Zagadou has made an impressive comeback. The center-back, who has been with Stuttgart since 2022, has extended his contract until June 30, 2027. Zagadou, considered a key leader, has played 53 competitive matches for VfB, scoring two goals and providing two assists. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Stuttgart’s rise to the UEFA Champions League as runners-up, despite injury-related setbacks. Fabian Wohlgemuth, VfB’s Director of Sport, praised Zagadou’s commitment: "‘Daxo’ is an important part of our squad, both for his footballing abilities and his personality." The player himself expressed his determination: "I will do everything in my power to deliver top performances for the coaching team, the club, and the fans in the upcoming season."

New Rule Changes for More Pace and Fairness

For the 2026/27 season, the Bundesliga has introduced many of the rules successfully tested at the World Cup to minimize stoppage time and increase the pace of play. For example, referees can now implement a five-second countdown for goal kicks and throw-ins: if this time is exceeded, a goal kick could turn into a corner for the opposing team. Additionally, players have a maximum of ten seconds to leave the field during substitutions; failure to comply means the incoming player must wait until the next stoppage in play to enter. Injured players must also usually wait for treatment on the sidelines and can only re-enter the field after one minute, with exceptions for goalkeepers.

In terms of personal sanctions, referees and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) have expanded their capabilities. For instance, the VAR can now intervene in cases of unjustified second yellow cards if the second card was clearly incorrect or should have been attributed to another player. The advantage rule has also been adjusted so that no caution is given if play continues incorrectly after an advantage is awarded. However, some details remain unresolved, such as the monitoring of clearly incorrect corner kicks or the possible covering of the mouth during verbal confrontations.

These changes promise excitement and dynamism both on and off the pitch as the Bundesliga takes the next step toward modernizing the game.
