PSG win 4-2 at City as Real Madrid stun Roma: five things from Champions League night

2026-10-16 · UEFA Champions League

Real Madrid scored three times from the 83rd minute to beat Roma 4-3, Bradley Barcola hit his first career hat-trick in Liverpool's 6-3 win at LASK and Aston Villa beat Fenerbahçe 6-0.

Paris Saint-Germain won 4-2 at Manchester City on Wednesday to go top of the Champions League table, on a night of 46 goals across nine matches. The holders are one of nine teams with six points from two games, level on goal difference with Barcelona and Aston Villa and ahead of them on goals scored.

1. PSG's first half settled it at the Etihad

PSG were 3-0 up after 32 minutes. Désiré Doué shot low into the near corner from outside the area, Ousmane Dembélé headed in 75 seconds later and Vitinha finished after a backheel from Warren Zaïre-Emery. City manager Enzo Maresca brought on Matheus Nunes, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye at half-time, and Erling Haaland scored twice, from an Ndiaye cross and a Bouaddi pass.

City finished with 27 shots, but Maghnes Akliouche's 62nd-minute effort kept PSG out of reach: City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma palmed it up and it dropped into the net. PSG substitute Ferran Torres even missed a late penalty, with former City manager Pep Guardiola watching from the stands.

2. Corners rescue Mourinho on his return to Rome

Real Madrid coach José Mourinho, honoured with banners by the Roma fans he led to the 2022 Conference League title, looked set for defeat when Donyell Malen scored twice in six minutes to put Roma 3-1 up early in the second half. Marten de Roon had opened the scoring for Roma before Kylian Mbappé equalised on his 100th Champions League appearance.

Madrid then scored three times from the 83rd minute, all from corners: substitutes Carlos Espí and Endrick, then former Roma defender Antonio Rüdiger with a 90th-minute header. Arda Güler set up the last two.

"The first half was the coach's fault; the second half was the players' fault," Mourinho said. Vinícius Júnior, replaced by Endrick on 59 minutes, was given a four-match ban shortly before kick-off for pulling an opponent's hair in Saturday's league win over Villarreal. "They do things shamelessly now," Mourinho said of the timing.

3. Barcola's first hat-trick lifts Liverpool

Bradley Barcola, Liverpool's £123m summer signing from PSG, had gone six appearances for his new club without a goal or an assist. In Linz he scored the first hat-trick of his career in a 6-3 win over LASK, two before half-time and a tap-in after it. Liverpool's 19 first-half shots were the most by an away side in the first half of a Champions League game since records began in 2003-04, and Liverpool led 6-1 before LASK substitute Florian Flecker scored twice late on. Lewis Koumas, 21, scored one and set up another, beating Steven Gerrard's record as the youngest Liverpool player to do both in a Champions League game.

"I'm really happy for Bradley," said Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola, adding that "to score a hat-trick in the Champions League is always very difficult."

4. Villa's biggest European win

Aston Villa beat Fenerbahçe 6-0, their biggest win in major European competition and Fenerbahçe's heaviest Champions League defeat, according to Sky Sports. Nicolas Jackson, Villa's record £65m signing who replaced the departed Ollie Watkins, scored twice in the first half and has three goals in two Champions League games. Ross Barkley, the designated penalty taker, also scored twice, and Johan Manzambi and Tammy Abraham got the others. It was Villa's first win at Villa Park this season.

"They did not deserve 6-0 but for us it was very important how we achieved the first win at home," said manager Unai Emery. Fenerbahçe coach Ismail Kartal said: "This is not acceptable. We apologise to all the supporters of the club."

5. Bodø/Glimt claim another big name

Fredrik Sjøvold's 52nd-minute strike gave Bodø/Glimt a 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund join Manchester City, Inter and Sporting among the big names recently beaten on the artificial pitch of the 8,200-capacity Aspmyra Stadium, the smallest ground in this season's competition.

"There's nothing we can complain about, we deserved to lose," said Dortmund coach Niko Kovač. "We didn't bring enough passion today – that's something Bodø did much better."
