Maresca's City make it seven from seven: five things from Saturday's Premier League

2026-10-17 · Premier League

Erling Haaland's brace sealed a 3-2 win over Ipswich and a record start for Enzo Maresca, Liverpool came from behind at nine-man Brentford, and Pedro Neto scored twice at Everton.

Manchester City beat Ipswich 3-2 on Saturday to make it seven Premier League wins from seven, and Enzo Maresca became the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games in charge of a team. City are six points clear of Arsenal, who visit Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Fulham also won.

1. City's perfect start survives a late scare

Phil Foden put City ahead on 19 minutes from Jérémy Doku's pass, and Daizen Maeda equalised two minutes later. Erling Haaland headed City back in front on 34 minutes and added a second on 69 from Iliman Ndiaye's pass, before VAR ruled out a third for a marginal offside. Zian Flemming's 90th-minute penalty for Ipswich made for a nervy finish. Haaland now has 100 non-penalty Premier League goals in 139 appearances, the fewest games any player has needed.

The win came at a cost: Haaland and Antoine Semenyo limped off at full-time, and Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes and Nico O'Reilly also picked up knocks. "Mateo said he was okay, Matheus said he was okay, Erling said he was also okay," Maresca said. "The only one we need to wait on was Antoine and we will see." 2. Liverpool turn it around against nine-man Brentford

Andoni Iraola's Liverpool won 2-1 at Brentford after trailing at half-time. Keane Lewis-Potter headed the hosts in front on 44 minutes, moments after a Liverpool penalty was overturned, but Brentford's Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off in first-half stoppage time for headbutting Liverpool's Jérémy Jacquet. Víctor Muñoz equalised from Florian Wirtz's through ball on 62 minutes, and Alexander Isak, back from a thigh problem, finished from Bradley Barcola's knockdown eight minutes later. Vitaly Janelt's second yellow card in stoppage time left Brentford with nine men.

Wirtz became the first player to create nine or more chances from open play in a Premier League game since Sadio Mané in January 2021. "The sending off changes the dynamics of the game," said Brentford boss Keith Andrews, whose side lost for the first time this season. Liverpool climb to fifth, but Iraola expects to be without Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong "for some time" after both went off injured.

3. Neto double at Everton, Martínez taken to hospital

Pedro Neto scored less than a minute after the restart and again in the 90th minute as Xabi Alonso's Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton. It was Neto's first Premier League brace, Chelsea's first league clean sheet since 17 January and Everton's first defeat of the season. Chelsea move up to fourth on 13 points.

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was stretchered off after a collision with Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite and taken to hospital for tests. "When he left the stadium he was conscious," Alonso said. "Hopefully it is not too bad but we need to wait." Mike Penders, 21, replaced Martínez on his Premier League debut. Everton boss David Moyes questioned why Chelsea's Morgan Rogers, already booked, escaped a second yellow for a first-half tackle on James Garner.

4. Manzambi punishes the club he nearly joined

Johan Manzambi, the 21-year-old who had agreed a summer move to Newcastle before Aston Villa stepped in, headed the only goal at St James' Park from João Gomes's cross on 36 minutes. It was Villa head coach Unai Emery's 100th Premier League win, in his 197th game. Newcastle have now gone 16 home games in all competitions without a clean sheet, the longest run in their history. "We were just not smart enough in our decision making in the final third," said Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle. Villa are level with Newcastle on eight points.

5. Arbeloa's first win lifts Fulham out of the bottom three

Alex Iwobi's 33rd-minute strike beat Hull 1-0 at Craven Cottage and gave Álvaro Arbeloa his first Premier League win as Fulham head coach, ending a six-match winless run. "We deserved it in other matches, but we couldn't get it; today was finally the day," Arbeloa said. Bournemouth and Tottenham are now the only sides without a league win, while Hull have gone five league games without one.
