Ligue 1 Update: PSG Maintains Lead, Marseille Chases, and Ligue 1+ Grows Amid Pricing Concerns

2025-10-08 · Ligue 1

After seven rounds of Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain retains top spot with 16 points, closely followed by Olympique de Marseille and Strasbourg. Meanwhile, the streaming platform Ligue 1+ crosses the one million subscriber mark but hints at possible price increases to fund its ambitions.

As the 2025 Ligue 1 season progresses through its seventh matchday, a clear hierarchy is beginning to form at the top of France's premier football division. Despite a 1-1 draw against Lille in the closing game of the round, Paris Saint-Germain continues to hold the lead with 16 points, maintaining a slender one-point advantage over their closest rivals.

Directly behind PSG are Olympique de Marseille, Racing Club de Strasbourg, and Olympique Lyonnais, all sitting on 15 points. However, Lyon has seen some setbacks recently after losing 1-2 to Toulouse, which allowed rivals Monaco and Lens, each with 13 points, to narrow the gap. Meanwhile, clubs like Stade Rennais and OGC Nice have struggled to climb higher, occupying 10th and 12th places respectively.

At the lower end of the table, concern mounts for FC Metz, currently at 18th place and still searching for their first win this season. They are joined in the relegation zone by SCO d'Angers and AJ Auxerre, highlighting the challenges faced by several clubs trying to avoid the drop.

Off the pitch, the Ligue 1 broadcasting landscape is evolving quickly with Ligue 1+, the recently launched streaming platform, already surpassing one million subscribers in less than two months. Offering an attractive package at €14.99 per month, with eight of nine matches available exclusively live each matchday, the platform has been welcomed enthusiastically by fans seeking extensive coverage.

Initial promotional offers reduced prices to €9.99 per month for the first three months, helping drive early adoption. However, future pricing revisions are on the horizon, especially in light of possible acquisition of rights to broadcast all nine Ligue 1 matches per round. Nicolas de Tavernost, Director General of LFP Media, confirmed: “S’il y a neuf matches, ce ne sera pas le même prix, c’est sûr. Il y aura une montée en puissance du tarif.” He also assured that new pricing structures, including a reduced rate for viewers under 26 years old, will be introduced.

Despite the rapid growth and rising subscriber base, currently targeting 1.15 million by season’s end and aiming for 2.25 million by 2029, concerns regarding the channel’s revenue performance persist. Nonetheless, Ligue 1+ solidifies its position as a key player in the French sports broadcasting sector, shaping how fans engage with the league.

As Ligue 1 unfolds, the battle for top spots remains fierce, with PSG and Marseille leading the charge. Meanwhile, the continued rise and strategic adjustments of Ligue 1+ may well define the future accessibility and popularity of French football for domestic and international audiences alike.
