Ligue 1 in Full Transformation: Marseille in Moral Crisis and Ligue 1+ Bets on Free Access

2026-04-20 · Ligue 1

As Olympique de Marseille struggles with a lack of fighting spirit, Ligue 1 launches an unprecedented initiative by offering the next matchday for free on Ligue 1+, aiming to attract new subscribers. A fresh start as the league seeks to reconnect with its audience.

Olympique de Marseille, a historic club in French football, is currently facing a severe crisis. Former France defender Marcel Desailly spoke out on Monday about the delicate situation at OM, highlighting a mental issue and a lack of "warriors" in the squad. After a tenth league defeat in a 2-0 loss to Lorient, OM has dropped to sixth place in Ligue 1—a position that has sparked real concern among supporters and legendary former players.

In an interview with AFP and RMC Sport, Desailly emphasized the deep disappointment caused by the team’s performances: "Benatia is heartbroken because they’re doing everything to put things in place. The infrastructure is there, but the team isn’t performing. We don’t feel the warriors we’d like to have at OM. You can lose the match, but at least you’d have fought, shown you were valiant. And there’s not even that. That’s the problem." These remarks follow a notable statement by sporting director Mehdi Benatia, who had condemned the players’ attitude, calling the situation a "scandal".

The 1998 World Cup winner also addressed the mental aspect, which he considers decisive in this decline: "At the start of the season, it seemed like the team was good. That the individual and collective choices weren’t too bad. We believed in it. There was real hope. It’s a mental issue." For Desailly, this collapse reflects the players’ inability to "handle stress" and meet the demands of a club as unique as OM.

Amid the sporting struggles of certain clubs, Ligue 1 continues its efforts to revitalize interest in the league. The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has announced an unprecedented move: the next Ligue 1 matchday, taking place from April 24–26, 2026, will be free for all via the Ligue 1+ platform. This initiative aims to attract new subscribers and boost the visibility of French football.

Launched as a response to years of turbulence with traditional broadcasters, the official Ligue 1+ channel seeks to establish itself in a competitive digital market. Despite reaching 1.1 million subscribers by late February, growth has stalled, and the LFP hopes to hit 2.1 million subscribers by the 2028–2029 season. Thanks to this temporary free access, fans will be able to watch eight out of nine matches broadcast on the platform—whether via web, mobile app, partner distributors, or directly.

This PR push comes shortly after the legal conviction of Spliiit for illegally sharing Ligue 1+ subscriptions, reducing piracy alternatives to official offers. The LFP is thus betting on both greater accessibility and strengthened legality to win back its audience.

This is a pivotal moment for French football, with iconic clubs in distress and a new broadcasting strategy. Marseille must mentally regroup to reclaim the pride of its past warriors, while Ligue 1 hopes to win over fans with easier match access. These initiatives could spark a positive dynamic before the season’s end and for years to come.
