La Liga 2026: Real Madrid faces Rayo Vallecano in a crucial Madrid derby

This Sunday, February 1, the Santiago Bernabéu will be the stage for one of the most thrilling matches of La Liga’s matchday 22: Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano. This Madrid derby is pivotal for Los Blancos, who, after their painful defeat and elimination in the Champions League against Benfica (4-2), need to secure all three points at home to stay strong in the title race.

Real Madrid currently sits in second place in the league table, and the match against Rayo takes on special significance—not just because of the local rivalry, but also because the visiting side arrives determined to capitalize on the hosts' instability to distance themselves from the relegation zone. The motivation and desire for revenge from Real Madrid’s players will undoubtedly be on full display on the pitch.

The match will kick off at 14:00 (Peninsular Spanish Time) and can be watched live on DAZN, the platform holding the broadcasting rights for this La Liga matchday in Spain. For those who prefer radio, stations like SER, COPE, Radio Marca, Onda Cero, and RNE will provide live commentary with detailed play-by-play coverage.

Referee Isidro Díaz de Mera has been appointed to officiate the match, with David Gálvez Rascón overseeing VAR duties, ensuring fairness and timely resolution of controversial plays. The recently renovated Santiago Bernabéu, with a capacity of 80,000 spectators, promises to be a vibrant setting, packed with eager fans ready to witness a unique spectacle.

In the broader national sports landscape, while La Liga focuses on this high-stakes derby, other leagues and disciplines continue their own key events. For instance, in basketball’s Liga Endesa, Valencia Basket delivered another offensive masterclass, defeating Hiopos Lleida 101-65, reinforcing their position near the top of the table behind Real Madrid in this competition. In English football, though the Premier League is in full swing, Manchester City and Arsenal are gearing up for the League Cup final, a duel that underscores the season’s dominance and rivalry.

Ultimately, the matchday promises intense emotions, with local and national rivalries at their peak. Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano fans will flock to the Santiago Bernabéu hoping to witness a true footballing spectacle, while the rest of Spanish football watches with competitive interest across various tournaments. Without a doubt, the Madrid derby is an unmissable date on the Spanish football calendar.
