Guardiola expected at Etihad as Man City host holders PSG on Wednesday

2026-10-11 · UEFA Champions League

It is City's first home game since they were found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules, and Guardiola's first Etihad visit since leaving last summer.

Manchester City host Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, 14 October, and Pep Guardiola is expected in the stands for his first visit since leaving the club last summer after a decade as manager.

It will also be City's first home game since an independent commission found them guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules between 2009-10 and 2017-18. City deny wrongdoing and have lodged an appeal. Guardiola, who won six Premier League titles and the Champions League in Manchester, responded to the verdict on social media: "I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran [Soriano], the players, staff, Enzo [Maresca] and you, our unique supporters." PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has also defended City, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Maresca welcomes his old boss

Enzo Maresca, Guardiola's former assistant and now his successor, said the pair last spoke after the Manchester derby. "I know that he's coming," Maresca said, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. "After 10 years here, he can come any time he wants - not just for a game or training session. I think it will be nice for him and for the fans."

Two wins on matchday 1

Both sides took maximum points from their opening league-phase game. City won 2-0 at FC Porto through two Erling Haaland goals, in the 47th minute and in stoppage time, while PSG beat Slovan Bratislava 6-1 at the Parc des Princes, with Ousmane Dembélé scoring twice. PSG top the 36-team table; City are eighth, also on three points.

Domestically, City went into the weekend top of the Premier League after five straight wins under Maresca. Their last game before PSG is Sunday's trip to Liverpool.

Team news

Haaland, who was replaced during Norway's Nations League defeat to Portugal, is fit, according to the Manchester Evening News. Before the weekend he had played every minute of City's Premier League season, with five goals in five games. With Omar Marmoush gone to Tottenham, Antoine Semenyo is City's alternative through the middle.

Luis Enrique rotated heavily for Saturday's 3-1 win over promoted Le Mans, resting Dembélé and Nuno Mendes; only Matvey Safonov, Achraf Hakimi and João Neves started from the usual first XI, Eurosport reported. After Lucas Beraldo's penalty and a Le Mans equaliser early in the second half, Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz, Warren Zaïre-Emery and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia came on around the hour. Kvaratskhelia restored the lead and Maghnes Akliouche sealed the win with his first PSG goal. Luis Enrique told Ligue1+ that the players' minutes load was his main criterion after the international break.
