Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni scored as Frank Lampard's side climbed out of the bottom three to 14th, while Newcastle lost 4-1 away for the second league trip in a row.

Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 at the CBS Arena on Monday night, their first Premier League home win in 25 years. Jack Rudoni's sixth-minute penalty and Sidiki Cherif's strike three minutes after the break put Frank Lampard's side 2-0 up, Newcastle defender Sven Botman pulled one back on 70 minutes, and substitutes Ellis Simms (81) and Stephen Mfuni (86) finished the job.

The result lifts Coventry out of the relegation zone to 14th on six points, level with Manchester United, after back-to-back wins. Newcastle, who would have climbed to fourth with a victory, stay 11th on eight points.

Two teenagers on the scoresheet

Cherif, 19, made his first Premier League start after his summer move from Fenerbahce and won the early penalty. Rudoni took it, then dedicated the goal to his grandmother: "She had a heart attack last week, she's stable and she'll be watching from hospital."

Cherif doubled the lead with a shot from outside the box, threaded through a crowd of Newcastle defenders. At 19 years and 301 days, he is Coventry's youngest Premier League scorer since Robbie Keane in April 2000, according to BBC Sport. "Sometimes you don't realise he's 19," Lampard said. "There's something about him I think is a bit special."

Mfuni, 18, came on in midfield for the last seven minutes, glided past his marker and drove a left-footed shot into the far bottom corner, then shushed the travelling fans.

Newcastle had the ball, Coventry the goals

Newcastle had 66% possession and 19 attempts, according to Chronicle Live. Coventry's Bobby Thomas, named man of the match by Coventry Live, made a recovering block before half-time after Matias Fernandez-Pardo had rounded goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

Newcastle coach Matthias Jaissle kept the same XI after the break and waited until almost the hour to bring on Joelinton, Amar Dedic and Bazamouna Toure, citing injury management. Botman's strike made it 2-1, but Simms scored with his first touch, three minutes and 15 seconds after coming off the bench, in his 150th Coventry appearance.

"It was a long 20 minutes and it's a fantastic strike," Lampard said of Botman's goal. "Stay in the game in those moments and the third goal was a big moment for us mentally."

Back-to-back 4-1 defeats

Newcastle's previous league trip also ended 4-1, at Leeds, and BBC Sport notes it is the first time since December 2012 that they have conceded four or more in consecutive Premier League away games. "That's hard. That's punishment in this league," Jaissle told BBC Sport. "In the boxes the games are decided. In both boxes we were not clean." He added: "We can only apologise to the fans that took the journey."

Coventry had lost their first four league games without scoring before winning at Nottingham Forest before the international break. Their previous home league games ended in a 1-0 defeat by Hull and a 5-0 loss to Brighton. "It was a complete performance," Lampard told Sky Sports, though he also warned: "We're going to be a relative underdog in pretty much every game."

Next for the Sky Blues is a trip to bottom-three Tottenham, with striker Taiwo Awoniyi available again after a three-match ban. Newcastle host Aston Villa on Saturday.
