Barcelona defeated Mallorca 3-0 in a match marked by refereeing controversies and the standout performances of young players like Lamine Yamal, alongside the last-minute registration of Rashford. Elsewhere, Liga Hypermotion kicked off with Granada and Deportivo de La Coruña battling for promotion. Meanwhile, the debate over La Liga’s potential expansion to Miami continues to grow.
The 2025-26 La Liga season kicked off this Saturday with a thrilling match at Son Moix, where Barcelona dominated Mallorca with a 3-0 victory in a game that was not without refereeing controversies and emotional highs, thanks to the performances of the Blaugrana’s youngest players.
Early on, 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, making his debut in the number 10 shirt, stood out by scoring a goal and assisting Raphinha to open the scoring in the 7th minute, reaffirming his emerging role in the team managed by Julian Nagelsmann. The introduction of Rashford, officially registered to play after a period of uncertainty, added more dynamism in the second half.
However, the most controversial moment came in the 24th minute when Ferrán Torres scored a goal while Mallorca’s defender Raíllo lay injured on the ground following a collision, sparking furious local protests and criticism of referee Munuera Montero. According to Martínez Montoro, a referee for ABC, "the referee is not a doctor, and given the possibility of a concussion, I believe the game should have been stopped." Nevertheless, the goal was allowed, igniting the first major controversy of the season.
The reaction from the home manager, Jagoba Arrasate, was harsh: "By the 25th minute, it was already impossible. [...] We’ll have to take care of the product, because someone who paid 180 euros to watch 25 minutes... I can’t believe it." He also pointed out the failure to apply concussion protocols, further fueling the refereeing controversy.
Barcelona sealed the match with a stunning goal from Lamine Yamal in the 90+4th minute, wrapping up a commanding debut performance that showcased a team blending youth and experience. Blaugrana manager Flick acknowledged the shortcomings: "Three very important points, but I didn’t like the game. [...] We have to play until the referee stops the match."
Meanwhile, Liga Hypermotion began its campaign with the clash between Granada and Deportivo de La Coruña at Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes. Both teams will look to establish themselves in the promotion race, with Granada aiming to improve after a winless preseason and Deportivo presenting a stronger squad and well-adjusted reinforcements for the upcoming season.
Finally, the debate over La Liga in Miami continues to gain traction. Rayo Vallecano president Martín Presa shared his views: "All teams should play there," reflecting the controversy and division surrounding the idea of taking Spanish league matches to the United States—a matter still under discussion and impacting multiple stakeholders in Spanish football.
