Como rout Man Utd 4-1 as Rice earns Arsenal a 2-2 draw at Bayern: four takeaways

2026-10-22 · UEFA Champions League

Nico Paz scored twice as Michael Carrick's side went a seventh game without a win, while Real Madrid joined four other clubs on a perfect nine points.

Manchester United were beaten 4-1 by Como on matchday three of the Champions League league phase on Wednesday night, while Declan Rice's 82nd-minute equaliser earned Arsenal a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich. Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig 4-1 to stay perfect, and Inter, down to ten men, finally got off the mark.

1. Manchester United hit a new low

Cesc Fàbregas's Como led after two minutes, when Nico Paz cut onto his left foot and bent a shot past Senne Lammens. Tasos Douvikas made it 2-0 four minutes after the break, Paz added a third on 57 minutes and Jacobo Ramón headed in the fourth. Joshua Zirkzee's stoppage-time goal was a consolation. The defeat, after a 2-0 loss at Atlético Madrid last time out, stretches United's run without a win to seven games. "I 100 per cent take responsibility for the overall team and the performance - that's where it stops," head coach Michael Carrick told TNT Sports. "There are no excuses at all. It is not acceptable." Captain Bruno Fernandes pointed at the game plan: "It's a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence." Como move up to ninth on six points; United are 20th on three and host Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.

2. Rice denies Bayern and Kane

Arsenal lost Bukayo Saka to injury in the 10th minute, and his replacement Eberechi Eze put them ahead on 25 minutes from a Martin Ødegaard pass. Harry Kane then took over: his through ball set up Alphonso Davies for the equaliser on 35 minutes, and he put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot on 61 minutes after a handball by Jurriën Timber. It was Kane's 10th consecutive Champions League game with a goal, one short of Cristiano Ronaldo's record. Rice levelled from substitute Viktor Gyökeres's pass on 82 minutes, and Manuel Neuer had to tip over a Timber shot in stoppage time. Bayern, without the suspended Michael Olise, remain unbeaten at home in the group or league phase since December 2013 but sit 14th on five points. Arsenal are seventh on seven.

3. Real Madrid and Mbappé keep the pace

José Mourinho's Real Madrid made it three wins from three: Bernardo Silva opened the scoring before half-time, Arda Güler made it 2-0, and Kylian Mbappé and Yan Diomande added late goals either side of Tidiam Gomis's reply for Leipzig. Mbappé has scored in every Champions League game this season and has 12 goals in 12 matches. "We know every point is important to get into the top eight, we know we have to win as many games as possible – we've won three and there are five to go," he said. Madrid are one of five clubs on nine points with Paris Saint-Germain, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Real Betis. Villa beat Viking 3-1, and Betis edged Feyenoord 1-0 with an Isco penalty.

4. Inter off the mark, LASK and Galatasaray strike away

Inter lost Alessandro Bastoni to two yellow cards in two minutes, but Carlos Augusto finished a quick counter-attack in the 77th minute for a 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk, their first points of the league phase. LASK came from behind to win 3-2 at Sporting CP, their first win of the campaign, and Galatasaray won 4-2 at Lille, with Victor Osimhen scoring against his former club. Club Brugge beat Lens 3-0. Lille, Porto and Slovan Bratislava are the only clubs still without a point.
