Caloundra secured a thrilling 5-2 victory over Pine Hills in their Round 3 clash of the Football Queensland Premier League 2, showcasing resilience and attacking prowess after an early scare.
In a display of attacking strength and determination, Caloundra overcame an early deficit to defeat Pine Hills 5-2 in their Round 3 fixture of the Football Queensland Premier League 2, held at Meridan Plains, Queensland, Australia. The victory marks a positive start to their campaign with two wins from three matches.
The game was a rollercoaster start with Riley Campbell opening the scoring for Caloundra in the second minute, quickly canceled out by Aaron Doherty just two minutes later for Pine Hills. Then, Alex Witte put Pine Hills ahead in the eleventh minute. However, Caloundra captain Kaine Frew's side fought back through Darryl Barton, who scored twice by the 27th minute, bringing Caloundra into a 3-2 lead going into the break.
Caloundra continued to dominate in the second half, with Jake Debbage adding a fourth goal in the 51st minute and Mackenar Bradfield sealing the win with a late fifth goal in the 90th minute. Pine Hills’ attempt to stay in the contest was hampered by defensive lapses; assistant coach Daniel Cunha commented, "It was a pretty even game, first half. [We] conceded three goals. Lazy goals, in our opinion. But we managed to bounce back with two goals. Managed to stay in the game, but yeah, second half with early, conceded early goals, so that was it for us."
Reflecting on the team’s progress, Caloundra captain Kaine Frew shared optimism but remained cautious: "Two [wins] from three [games]. I think we'll probably be in the top four now. Not a bad start. It's still very early days. Yeah, you can't get too ahead of yourselves. I think you've just got to take it week by week for the moment."
This result follows Caloundra's previous weekend loss to Moreton City Excelsior, where they fell 3-1 after conceding an own goal and two goals from Brayden O'Regan of Moreton City. Despite that setback, Caloundra’s late consolation goal from Maxx Demerutis showed their fighting spirit.
Caloundra will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to host Mitchellton in their upcoming match, while Pine Hills aim to regroup ahead of their trip to Samford.
