The Bundesliga delivers exciting developments: Borussia Dortmund parts ways with sporting director Sebastian Kehl while extending captain Emre Can’s contract despite an ACL injury. FC Bayern Munich edges closer to the championship with impressive form and goal-scoring records, while Werder Bremen secures crucial points in the relegation battle.
Borussia Dortmund has mutually agreed with sporting director Sebastian Kehl to terminate their collaboration immediately. This decision followed an open discussion between Kehl and the club’s management, including Lars Ricken, on Sunday. Ricken stated: "In a very open conversation, Sebastian Kehl, Carsten Cramer, and I reached the shared conviction that summer would be the right time for change. To allow both sides to prepare, we mutually agreed to end Sebastian’s role immediately." Kehl, who held leadership positions at BVB since 2018, won the DFB-Pokal in 2021 and reached the 2024 UEFA Champions League final with Dortmund. Reflecting on his nearly 24 years at the club, he said: "I owe Borussia Dortmund a lot and am proud to have been part of the BVB family for nearly 24 years. [...] Borussia Dortmund, the incredible stadium, and the Südtribüne will always hold a special place in my heart. It was an honor."
Despite Kehl’s departure, BVB has secured a key figure long-term: Captain Emre Can extended his contract by one year, until June 30, 2027. Currently recovering from an ACL injury, Can remains optimistic about his comeback: "I’m happy to continue being part of Borussia Dortmund. My goal is to return to full fitness as soon as possible, play alongside my teammates, and achieve success with the club." Managing director Lars Ricken added: "Emre is our captain and an absolute role model... We have complete confidence he’ll return in top form."
On the pitch, FC Bayern Munich continues to dominate the Bundesliga. Their 4:0 victory over Union Berlin underscored their supremacy, bringing their season goal tally to 97—just four shy of the historic 101-goal record, with games still remaining. Coach Vincent Kompany remarked: "I think we’ll break this record, but our priority is elsewhere right now... We are who we are and will stick to our style." Beyond seasoned players, youth talent shone: Erblin Osmani made his Bundesliga debut, while Maycon Douglas Cardozo earned playing time. This blend of experience and fresh talent appears key to Bayern’s success.
In the relegation battle, Werder Bremen made a statement with a 1:0 away win at Wolfsburg. The victory marked a milestone for veteran Leonardo Bittencourt, who celebrated his 300th Bundesliga appearance: "I’m incredibly proud to have played 300 games," he said. Justin Njinmah scored the decisive goal—his fifth of the season—securing three vital points. Coach Daniel Thioune summarized: "This was pure relegation battle, not a treat for fans. In the second half, my team showed they can fight." The win significantly boosted Werder’s buffer over the relegation zone.
Another weekend highlight was Borussia Dortmund’s comeback against Hamburger SV, turning a weak first half into a 3:2 victory. Manager Niko Kovač noted: "It was clear at halftime." Substitute Ramy Bensebaini stole the show, converting two penalties to become the match-winner. The game featured three penalties—a Bundesliga first for Dortmund—with an xG (expected goals) value of 6.24, an unprecedented figure. Despite the loss, HSV striker Serhou Guirassy impressed, scoring his first goal against all current Bundesliga teams.
The Bundesliga remains thrilling this season: FC Bayern chases records, relegation-threatened teams battle for survival, and Borussia Dortmund navigates personnel changes while maintaining top performances. Fans can expect an eventful finish to the campaign.
