Newcomers Elversberg led 3-0 and survived a seven-goal game with four penalties, while Gladbach lost a sixth straight to stay on zero points.
Elversberg beat Augsburg 4-3 in a game of four penalties and four VAR decisions, Bayer Leverkusen ended Freiburg's unbeaten start and Gladbach lost again. Four things from Bundesliga matchday 6.
Elversberg survive a seven-goal farce
The newly promoted side led 3-0 after 28 minutes through Lukas Petkov, Lasse Günther and Maximilian Rohr, then had to hold on for their third win of the season. Augsburg's Fabian Rieder (penalty, 45+9) and Michael Gregoritsch (penalty, 76) pulled it back to 3-2, Elversberg made it 4-2 in the 89th minute and Augsburg scored again a minute later. Four penalties were awarded: Rieder and Gregoritsch scored theirs, Petkov scored from the follow-up and Elversberg striker Noel Futkeu hit the bar. One Elversberg goal was also ruled out. "It felt like a penalty shootout. I have never experienced a game like that," said Elversberg goalkeeper Niklas Kristof. Augsburg coach Manuel Baum, who congratulated his opposite number on "a crazy win", added: "I don't think I have ever seen so many penalty decisions and VAR interventions, and I don't want to again." Elversberg are sixth with 10 points.
Schick sinks Freiburg, Bayern go top
Freiburg lost their first game of the season, 2-1 at Leverkusen, and with it the top of the table. Derry Scherhant put them ahead after 14 minutes, Ibrahim Maza equalised and then won the game himself, regaining a lost ball on the byline and dribbling into the box to set up Patrik Schick's 76th-minute winner. Freiburg's Lucas Höler missed an open goal with a diving header at the death. "A good performance against a very, very good opponent, which should give us strength and courage," said Freiburg coach Julian Schuster. Bayern Munich take over at the top and visit Freiburg next Sunday.
Füllkrug keeps Werder's comebacks coming
Werder Bremen were 0-2 down to Paderborn on the 100th birthday of the Weserstadion and again came back to draw 2-2, the third game in a row in which they took a point after trailing by two goals. Niclas Füllkrug scored twice, one from the penalty spot, and leads the Bundesliga scoring chart with six goals.
Gladbach: six games, zero points
Borussia Mönchengladbach lost 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim, their sixth defeat in as many games, and are bottom with no points and a goal difference of -12 (8 scored, 20 conceded). They are five points from safety: Schalke, Paderborn and Union Berlin, in 15th to 17th, each have five.
