Lens coach Yannick Cahuzac keeps his job but is without striker Franjo Ivanović, in concussion protocol; sixth-placed Marseille are two points ahead of ninth-placed Lens.
Lens, four days after losing 9-1 at home to Como in the Champions League, the heaviest European defeat in the club's history, host Marseille at Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Sunday at 20:45. It is the last game of Ligue 1 matchday 10 before the international break.
What the table says
Marseille are sixth on 15 points (five wins, four defeats) and Lens ninth on 13 (four wins, one draw, four defeats). Marseille have won their last four league games, scoring 13 goals and conceding five: 2-0 at Troyes, 5-2 at Angers, 4-3 at home to Le Havre, now bottom of the table, and 2-0 against Toulouse. Lens won three in a row before a 1-0 defeat at Lille on 30 October, and nine of their 13 points came at home (three wins, one defeat). Marseille have taken six points from four away games, with two wins and two defeats.
Lens: a coach under pressure
Yannick Cahuzac, 41 and a former Lens captain, replaced Dino Toppmöller in mid-September and is still in the job. Sporting director Jean-Louis Leca told RMC Sport: "If he had offered his resignation, we would have refused it." Cahuzac took the blame for the Como night: "On the emotional side, we all failed, me first." He said that at half-time, 3-0 down, he hesitated between shutting up shop and bringing on fresh blood, and the score reached 6-0 soon after the restart.
Lens have lost their last three Champions League games and conceded 14 goals in them, according to Football365. Defender Jonathan Gradit, 33, described a squad feeling "shame, frustration, irritation" and said management gathered the players to tell them some home truths. Foot01 reports that club president Joseph Oughourlian will speak on Ligue1+ on Sunday, and Football365 that supporters are preparing actions to show their anger. Lens will also be without striker Franjo Ivanović, who took a knock to the head in an aerial challenge against Como and is in concussion protocol, the club said.
Marseille: confidence and one absence
Marseille coach Bruno Genesio's side won 1-0 at Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday, their first points of this season's Europa League, thanks to a goal from striker Amine Gouiri, his seventh of the season according to La Provence. Genesio said the team had worked on its defensive block because "we were conceding too much", despite scoring in almost every game. Marseille's Amine Harit and Emerson both missed the trip to Germany; Harit is back in the squad, Emerson is out, Foot01 reports.
On Saturday Genesio said: "It's a wounded team we are going to face, but we know what Lens are worth in terms of combativity and the intensity they can bring, especially at Bollaert. We expect a reaction from them, we will have to be ready from the start." He added that a good start could turn the crowd on Lens, but that if the home side settle with the stands behind them, the evening could become difficult for Marseille.
